5 Tips to Extend Avocado Shelf Life

5 Tips to Extend Avocado Shelf Life

Published on May 8, 2025 by SunnyVale Orchards

Avocados are delicate fruits that need proper care to stay fresh and flavorful. Whether you’re a retailer, wholesaler, or end customer, these five simple tips will help you get the most out of each carton.

1. Store at the Right Temperature

  • Ideal Range: 5–7 °C (41–45 °F)

  • Why It Matters: Too cold, and the avocado flesh will brown; too warm, and it ripens—and spoils—too quickly.

2. Control Humidity

  • Target: 90–95% relative humidity

  • How to Achieve: Use humidity trays or a humidity-controlled cold room. This prevents the skins from dehydrating and keeps fruit plump.

3. Handle with Care

  • Use Foam Inserts: Our 500 g trays cradle each fruit to prevent bruising.

  • Avoid Dropping: Even a small impact can accelerate spoilage.

4. Monitor Ethylene Exposure

  • Separate Ethylene Producers: Apples and bananas emit ethylene gas, which speeds ripening.

  • Use Ventilated Storage: Proper airflow helps disperse excess gas.

5. Plan Your Ripening

  • Stage Control: Remove avocados from cold storage and let them sit at 18–22 °C for 3–5 days.

  • Check Daily: Gently press near the stem; when the skin gives slightly, it’s ready to eat.

By following these best practices, you’ll maximize shelf life, reduce waste, and deliver perfectly ripe avocados every time.
